As a child my sport was ski-racing and I didn’t get on a horse till I was about 12 years old. I rode in my first horse trials aged 14 and never looked back. I evented in my native New Zealand up to CCI*** level and in 2004 I was offered the chance to train in the UK with the legendary Andrew Nicholson. It was a big decision to leave my home country but I knew how incredibly lucky I was to be offered this opportunity with one of the world’s leading event riders so with my two top horses, THE VERDICT II and VIPER MAX, I came to join the team in the heart of Wiltshire.
During my first season in the UK I took THE VERDICT II to Bramham, Blenheim and then to Boekelo in the Netherlands. The following season we finished in the top 20 at Barbury and then went on to complete the CCI**** at Burghley. During my time with Andrew I learnt a tremendous amount from a great horseman for which I will be forever grateful.
The time came for me to branch out on my own and with the help and support of some wonderful owners, I set up my own yard near Wootton Bassett in 2005 where I enjoyed a number of successful seasons. The business continued to expand and in 2009 I moved to Southrop in the Cotswolds. It was here that my path crossed with Annabel Scotts Oneforhtenotebook who has been the yards flag bearer ever since successfully competing at CCI*** level.
In 2014 I moved to my current premises at Old Vicarage Farm near Hartpury with my partner Bryony Parkyn. We have fantastic facilities with a purpose built yard, an enclosed 60m x 35m school, horse walker, turnout and excellent hacking.
As well as continuing to compete at the top level in eventing, Old Vicarage Farm has enabled me to develop a new and growing sector of the business; backing, schooling and pre-training racehorses. We are fortunate enough to be supported by some of the biggest names in the flat racing world.
